Re: Thread for New Zeland Tour of South Africa, 2012/13
New Zealand fast bowler Adam Milne has been ruled out of the Twenty20 series against South Africa, after picking up an Achilles injury while warming-up for a first-class game on Monday. He will be replaced by Mark Gillespie, who is returning to international cricket after a nine-month injury lay-off.
Milne, 20, injured his leg while exercising just prior to his game for Central Districts against Wellington in New Zealand's domestic first-class competition, the Plunket Shield. The injury was not very serious, New Zealand Cricket's medical team said, but they didn't want risk any further damage and so decided to pull Milne out of the series.
Gillespie, who will join the squad in South Africa on Friday, last played an international match against the same opposition - the Wellington Test on South Africa's tour of New Zealand in March this year. That series also marked an international comeback for Gillespie, who had not played for New Zealand for over three years previously. He made his mark too, finishing New Zealand's top wicket-taker despite playing only two out of the three Tests, but was then ruled out with an ankle injury.

Lions' left-arm spinner Aaron Phangiso and all-rounder Chris Morris are expected to receive their first call-up to South Africa's Twenty20 squad, with the pugnacious Roelof van der Merwe tipped for a recall. Those are just three of the changes that could be made, as a new-look outfit has been promised for the three-match series against New Zealand.

Re: Thread for New Zeland Tour of South Africa, 2012/13
New Zealand Cricket chairman Chris Moller has apologised to Ross Taylor for the manner in which the team's captaincy changeover played out, but he said there was no need for heads to roll over the saga.
Brendon McCullum replaced Taylor as captain in all formats last week after Taylor declined an offer to stay on as leader in Tests only, and the way the captaincy issue was handled left Taylor feeling disaffected enough to sit out of the upcoming tour of South Africa.
"The board has reviewed all aspects of the captaincy issue and wishes to publicly place on record its apologies to Ross Taylor and his family for the manner in which events have unfolded," Moller told a press conference in Wellington on Wednesday.

To everyone's surprise, Faf du Plessis will be the captain of t20 side although AB de Villiers is part of the squad but won't captain because his workload will be managed over the summer.
The T20 squad has four new players, including a new wicketkeeper to relieve de Villiers of his burden. Quinton de Kock, who turns 20 on Monday and was part of South Africa's most recent under-19 World Cup squad, will don the gloves.
De Kock is seen as one of the options for a permanent wicketkeeper to replace Mark Boucher in all formats.
The other 3 New Faces are Aaron Phangiso, Chris Morris, Henry Davids.

South Africa A Squad

Kyle Abbott
Craig Alexander
Davy Jacobs (WK)

Aaron Phangiso
Roelof van der Merwe
Vaughn van Jaarsveld

South Africa have stuffed their A side with three wicketkeepers for their Twenty20 practice match against New Zealand next Tuesday. The front-runner is Cobras' Dane Vilas, who was part of South Africa's unofficial T20 squad that toured Zimbabwe in June. Also in the mix is Davy Jacobs of the Warriors and Mangaliso Mosehle of the Titans.
Jacobs returned to professional cricket after an absence of a season due to a severe hip injury. He has had a successful comeback and has already scored two centuries in the first-class competition, where he lies second on the run charts, and two half-centuries in the one-day cup besides wicketkeeping.
Heino Kuhn has kept wicket ahead of Mosehle at the Titans, but Mosehle did the job at the under-19 World Cup in 2008. His century and two half-centuries in the one-day cup have got him noticed by the national selectors.
There are also some familiar faces making a return. Left-arm spinner Roelof van der Merwe is back into the frame as well as middle-order batsman Vaughn van Jaarsveld who has enjoyed good form in the one-day cup.
Dolphins' quicks Kyle Abbott and Craig Alexander join Lions' fast man Hardus Viljoen in the pace attack. The allrounders' role has been handed to David Wiese, who put in a sterling performance in the CLT20 semi-final. The only player who is also part of South Africa's T20 squad is Aaron Phangiso, the left-arm spinner who earned his maiden national call-up earlier today. The side will be captained by Justin Ontong.

Michael Bates, the Auckland seamer, has been named as a replacement for Mark Gillespie in New Zealand's Twenty20 squad for the tour of South Africa. Gillespie had originally been named as a replacement for Adam Milne, but he has been ruled out because of a side strain.
Gillespie had to leave the field on the third day of the Plunket Shield match between Wellington and Central Districts and tests revealed that he had strained an abdominal muscle.
This is total disgraceful

New Zealand won't be underestimated - De Villiers
South Africa will not take their summer series lightly, even though they are of a significantly lower-profile than the contests fought earlier in the year.
"We have to play as well as we played in Australia to showcase the fact that we are No.1 in the world in Test cricket," AB de Villiers, the team's limited-overs captain said. "And we also want to do well at home."
"We understand that we are the favourites and we should win if we play good cricket," de Villiers said. "We've got the mental advantage but we still have to play well. They are one of those teams that when they get it right, they are hard to beat."
De Villiers expects the limited-overs matches to be more closely contested because that is where New Zealand can pose the biggest threat. "New Zealand are a very busy team and they have a very good fielding unit so that's what makes them good in the T20s and ODIs," he said. "They've had a few upsets to their Test team so they are still finding their feet but they are more dangerous in T20s and ODIs. They've got a few big hitters, they run well between the wickets and they've got good skill with the bowlers."
The "upsets" de Villiers referred to centre on the withdrawal of Ross Taylor from the tour following a captaincy dispute with coach Mike Hesson. Not only have New Zealand lost their captain as a result of the fracas, but also the mainstay of their batting order. Many South Africa players have sympathised with Taylor's plight with Hashim Amla posting on Twitter that he feels for Taylor, and de Villiers saying he would like to see him "come back to cricket soon."

AB de Villiers has pulled out of South Africa's Twenty20 internationals at home against New Zealand in December, citing the need for extra rest before the Tests in January. Justin Ontong, the Cape Cobras captain, has been called into the squad.
"It's been an exhausting few months and I feel that I need some extra rest before the Test series," De Villiers said. "It's for this reason that I have put in the request and I'm grateful to the team management for supporting this decision."

Re: Thread for New Zeland Tour of South Africa, 2012/13
For the first time since readmission, the majority of South Africa's television viewers could be left without any live Test cricket on their screens for the 2012-13 season. The national broadcaster, the SABC, has decided it will only air Twenty20s and ODIs and show highlights packages of up to two hours from the upcoming Tests against New Zealand.
This comes after it was revealed that the SABC was under financial constraints, which led it to consider not broadcasting any cricket this summer. Cricket South Africa and the SABC were engaged in talks early this week to negotiate and reached a compromise where the free-to-air channel paid ten times less this season compared to last.
In a press release, CSA said it hoped that the following series against Pakistan, which includes three Tests, five ODIs and two T20Is, "will be shown by the SABC in its entirety". The first of two Tests against New Zealand begins on January 2.
"It is a huge disappointment for us that the Tests matches won't be shown live although we are pleased the other games will," Jacques Faul, CSA acting chief executive told ESPNcricinfo. "We want to grow the game and the communities we want to reach out to will not have access to the matches."
Although CSA sold production rights for home internationals to subscription channel SuperSport, it still controls the broadcast rights. The package it sold to SuperSport excludes the free-to-air rights, which CSA holds back for the SABC. "Even though it means we get less money from those rights we carve them out so we can get the free-to-air broadcast," Faul said.
Last season, the SABC reportedly paid in the range of R30 million (US$3.5 million) to broadcast matches. CSA initially offered the SABC a deal for about half that but it was rejected. It has since had to resort to an even lower rights fee, partly because the parties ran out of time to negotiate further. The first match of South Africa's home summer, a T20 international against New Zealand in Durban will be played in two days' time and CSA were anxious for the deal to be sealed.
It has, however, led CSA to question its arrangement with the SABC going forward. "We will definitely assess our relationship with them in future because we do not want to do business like this," Faul said.
CSA's only other option would be to look at an arrangement with e.tv, the other non-subsciption channel in the country. International cricket matches played in South Africa are regarded as "listed sports events" by the Independent Communications Authority, which means they must be available on free-to-air television.
Despite those regulations, the SABC does not believe it has failed its remit. "The decision to broadcast these matches is a clear indication that we take our mandate seriously and we are cognisant that the public of South Africa deserve to see their cricket team," it said in a statement.
Cricket is the second-most popular sport in South Africa and almost five times as many people watch T20 and ODI matches on the SABC compared to SuperSport. Almost seven times more watch Test cricket on the national broadcaster and those could now face a blackout on live coverage. SuperSport will continue to show all matches live and the SABC's main sports radio station, 2000, will provide live ball-by-ball commentary at all the games.
Tim Southee, the New Zealand fast bowler, has been ruled out of the Test series in South Africa because of a thumb injury. He needs surgery for a ruptured ligament and is likely to be sidelined for six-eight weeks.
Southee sustained the injury while diving in the field during a Plunket Shield match between Northern Districts and Wellington at Karori Park. He scored 156 off 130 balls and took seven wickets in Northern Districts' six-wicket win.
"He landed heavily on his thumb while fielding, with scans indicating the ligament has fully ruptured and retracted," New Zealand physio Paul Close said. "After consultation with NZC medical staff and a hand specialist it was decided the best course of action is for him to have surgery.
"He will commence rehabilitation immediately following the procedure, with a view to him returning to cricket during the home summer. The procedure is likely to keep him out of the game for 6-8 weeks."
New Zealand have not decided on a replacement for Southee.
