Tamim Iqbal

Full name: Tamim Iqbal Khan

Born: March 20, 1989, Chittagong

Major teams: Bangladesh, Asia XI, Bangladesh A, Bangladesh Under-19s, Chittagong Division, Nottinghamshire

Playing role: Opening batsman

Batting style: Left-hand bat

Relation: Uncle - Akram Khan, Brother - Nafees Iqbal

Tamim Iqbal was already one of Bangladesh's most assured batsmen at the time of his 21st birthday, and will be a vital component at the top of the order for years to come. His promise was apparent when, batting for the Under-19s against England at the end of 2005, he smashed 112 from just 71 balls to help Bangladesh cruise to victory. The left-hander is regarded as one of the most exciting prospects in Bangladesh cricket and is arguably the hardest hitter of the cricket ball in the country. His elegance and style through the off side is a treat to watch but his trademark shot is the straight drive, capped with a text-book like follow-through.

Angelo Mathews

Full Name: Angelo Davis Mathews

Born: June 2, 1987, Colombo

Major teams: Sri Lanka, Basnahira North, Colts Cricket Club, Kolkata Knight Riders, Pune Warriors, Sri Lanka A, Sri Lanka Under-19s

Playing role: Allrounder

Batting style: Right-hand bat

Bowling style: Right-arm fast-medium

Mathews made his debut for Sri Lanka Under-19s when he was just 16 years
old, against Pakistan in 2003. He is an outstanding allrounder, capable
of batting anywhere in the top order and also delivers lively medium
pace. A fixture in the youth side since his debut, he was handed the
captaincy for the 2005 tour of England. The highlight on that tour was
an unbeaten 123 in the third Test which wasnot enough to stave of
defeat. During the U-19 triangular series involving Bangladesh and
England towards the end of 2005, Mathews produced a series impressive,
mature innings with the bat. An unbeaten 70 set up a win against England
and he followed that with 97 not out, in a defeat, against Bangladesh.
After a quiet debut first-class season, in 2007-08, he made big strides
with 696 runs at 58 and carried his good form in to Sri Lanka A's tour
of South Africa.

Full name: Dwayne John Bravo

Born: October 7, 1983, Santa Cruz, Trinidad

Major teams: West Indies, Chennai Super Kings, Essex, Kent, Mumbai Indians, Trinidad & Tobago, University of West Indies Vice Chancellor's XI, Victoria

Nickname: Johnny

Playing role: Allrounder

Batting style: Right-hand bat

Bowling style: Right-arm medium-fast

Relation: Half-brother - DM Bravo

Dwayne Bravo is that creature long needed by West Indies, an allrounder. He made his Test debut at Lord's in July 2004, and took three wickets in the first innings with his medium-paced swingers. He also showed a cool enough temperament to forge a confident start at the crease, displaying a straight bat despite his team's facing a big England total of 568. His follow-ups were even better. By the end of the series, West Indies were down and out, but in Bravo, they had unearthed a special talent. He scored plenty of runs and claimed a bunch of wickets in four Tests, but nowhere was his ability more evident than in Manchester, where he top-scored for the team, and then restricted England with a six-wicket haul. He hit 107 against South Africa in April 2004-05 at Antigua to bring up his maiden century and in November 2005, scored a magnificent 113 against Australia at Hobart. He dazzled in the ODI series against India in May 2006, bamboozling the batsmen with his slower ones and chipping in with match-winning contributions with the bat. He grew as a player in the limited-overs format in the 2006-07 season with a fluent unbeaten 112, his maiden ODI ton, against England in the Champions Trophy and achieved his best career figures, 4 for 39, against India in the last game before the World Cup

Full name: Timothy Grant Southee

Born: December 11, 1988, Whangarei, Northland

Major teams: New Zealand, Chennai Super Kings, Essex, New Zealand Under-19s, Northern Districts

Playing role: Bowler

Batting style: Right-hand bat

Bowling style" Right-arm medium-fast

New Zealand's selectors monitored the progress of Tim Southee, a right-arm swing bowler, with great interest before handing him his Test debut against England in Napier while he was still 19. Southee responded with 5 for 55 before smashing 77 off 40 balls in the second innings with nine sixes to hint at a bright all-round future. He's seemed destined for an international career from his early days. He made his first-class debut for Northern Districts at the age of 18 in late 2006-07 and the next season showed significant promise, claiming 6 for 68 in a particularly impressive effort against Auckland. Named in the squad for the Under-19 World Cup, Southee received a major boost when he was called into the senior set-up for New Zealand's Twenty20 matches against England in early 2008. On debut, he took 1 for 38 in a losing cause at Eden Park.

Chamara Silva
Player Of The Day - Page 2 Images?q=tbn:ANd9GcShCOy1LMADVJ_j39q7IaiDBkUh6NVKSTv8-VlYI3lN3i8FoR8mnQPlayer Of The Day - Page 2 Images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQwxEZppFWBmBOotXbXzw43V6dxawvvHrN0878XY_bG0Bz83yqZ

Full name: Lindamlilage Prageeth Chamara Silva

Born: December 14, 1979, Panadura

Major teams: Sri Lanka, Basnahira South, Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club, Deccan Chargers, Panadura Sports Club, Sebastianites Cricket and Athletic Club, Sinhalese Sports Club, Sri Lanka A

Playing role: Batsman

Batting style: Right-hand bat

Bowling style: Legbreak

Chamara Silva first arrived on the scene as a slightly-built 19-year-old in 1999, a beneficiary of the youth policy adopted by Sidath Wettimuny, the chairman of the selectors at the time. He began with a promising 54 on his ODI debut against Australia. His mannerisms while batting - particularly bow-legged stance and the flamboyant cover drives - immediately attracted comparisons with the great Aravinda de Silva. But despite being prodigiously talented, he failed to nail down a regular place during tours to Sharjah (1999), Zimbabwe (1999), Pakistan (2000) and England (2002). After the England tour he dropped out of the selectors' radar and returned to domestic cricket where he captained Panadura Cricket Club. Over the next four years he was a prolific run-scorer, especially after a move to Sebastianites for the 2004-05 season. Eventually he caught the eye of Tom Moody, who could not understand why he was not in the national squad. A quick promotion back into the Sri Lanka A team followed and after a successful tour to India he won a long overdue international recall.

Full name: Eoin Joseph Gerard Morgan

Born: September 10, 1986, Dublin

Major teams: England, Ireland, Bangalore Royal Challengers, England A, Ireland A, Ireland Under-19s, Kolkata Knight Riders, Middlesex, Middlesex 2nd XI, Sir Paul Getty's XI

Nickname: Moggie

Playing role: Middle-order batsman

Batting style: Left-hand bat

Bowling style: Right-arm medium

Fielding position: Occasional wicketkeeper

Height: 5 ft 9 in

Education: Catholic University School

Eoin Morgan is an Irish-born Englishman with a reputation for inventive and audacious strokeplay. At the age of 23, he shot to prominence on the back of two match-winning innings against South Africa. First was a 34-ball 67 in the Champions Trophy in September 2009 which he followed two months later with an unbeaten 45-ball 85 in the opening Twenty20 of England's tour of South Africa. His bold approach and crisp hitting was reminiscent of the arrival of another English import, Kevin Pietersen, in 2005. With a blend of nous and power, Morgan looks a natural 'finisher' - a role England have struggled to fill for a decade.

Born: May 28, 1974, Mianwali, Punjab

Major teams: Pakistan, Khan Research Labs, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Sargodha

Playing role: Middle-order batsman

Batting style: Right-hand bat

Bowling style: Legbreak

An orthodox batsman with reasonable technique, Misbah-ul-Haq caught the eye with his unflappable temperament in the tri-nation one-day tournament in Nairobi in 2002, scoring two fifties in three innings, including one in the final against Australia. But before Pakistan could hail him as a possible middle-order mainstay, Misbah's form slumped - he didn't manage a single 20-plus score in three Tests against Australia and was duly dumped. Pakistan's abysmal World Cup campaign - and the wholesale changes to the team in its aftermath - gave Misbah another chance to redeem himself, but he did little of note in the limited opportunities he got.

Full name: Ricky Thomas Ponting

Born: December 19, 1974, Launceston, Tasmania

Major teams: Australia, ICC World XI, Kolkata Knight Riders, Somerset, Tasmania

Nickname: Punter

Playing role: Top-order batsman

Batting style: Right-hand bat

Bowling style: Right-arm medium

Height: 1.78 m

Education: Mowbray Primary; Brooks Senior High School, Launceston

Relation: Uncle - GD Campbell

Ricky Ponting, the most uncompromising player of his generation, grew into Australia's most successful run-maker and only sits below Bradman in the country's overall ratings. It takes an extremely critical eye to diminish his run-scoring achievements, which seem to collect new records in every series. Like spotting a celebrity, it's necessary to look twice when analysing Ponting, first as the archetypal modern batsman, then as the country's 42nd Test captain. There is no doubt about his greatness after taking guard, but his leadership has been under scrutiny for much of his reign. While his blade has sparkled, his stewardship is pock-marked by three Ashes defeats - two in England and one at home - and stumbles to South Africa and India.

Full name: Shanthakumaran Sreesanth

Born: February 6, 1983, Kothamangalam, Kerala

Major teams: India, Asia XI, Kerala, Kerala Under-19s, Kings XI Punjab, Kochi Tuskers Kerala, Warwickshire

Also known as: Gopu

Playing role: Bowler

Batting style: Right-hand bat

Bowling style: Right-arm fast-medium

For three seasons, Sreesanth was hardly anything more than an answer to a trivia question - who is the only Kerala bowler to have taken a Ranji Trophy hat-trick ? His rise, though, was rapid, and since he played for a weak side, unnoticed. Not too many bowlers get selected for the Duleep Trophy in their first season, like Sreesanth did in 2002-03 after snapping up 22 wickets in his first seven games. His progress was halted owing to a hamstring injury in the following year, but he returned stronger, with a more side-on action and increased pace, and a superb display in the Challenger Trophy, in 2005, propelled him to the national squad for the Sri Lanka series. In the last game of his impressive debut season, he snapped up 6 for 55 against England. Idiosyncratic, with an aggressive approach - to the stumps and the game - he can be expensive in one-dayers, but is also a wicket-taking bowler. He does it in Tests, too - in Antigua in June 2006 he fired out Ramnaresh Sarwan and Brian Lara (for 0) in successive overs, and then took five wickets in Jamaica and played a key role in bowling India to a historic triumph

Playing role: Batsman

A nimble, Chaplinesque right-hander, Ramnaresh Sarwan was brought up in the South American rainforest around the Essequibo River. After his first Test innings, 84 not out against Pakistan, Ted Dexter was moved to predict a Test average of more than 50 - an unfair millstone to hang around any young player's neck. But on his first tour, to England in 2000, Sarwan lived up to the hype by topping the averages. His footwork, which seemed to require no early trigger movements, was strikingly confident and precise.

Born: November 7, 1980, Wellington

Major teams: New Zealand, Glamorgan, Gloucestershire, Mumbai Indians, Wellington

Playing role: Allrounder

Batting style: Left-hand bat

Bowling style: Left-arm fast-medium

Relation: Aunt - JM Coulston

A left-arm medium-fast bowler who can swing the ball, James Franklin was introduced to international cricket when barely out of his teens after New Zealand suffered a run of injuries. Franklin made his one-day debut in 2000-01, and played two home Tests against Pakistan the same season, but struggled to make an impact and lost his place after the Sharjah Cup in April 2002. Back in domestic cricket he worked on his batting, which he had neglected, and filled out generally. He returned to the side in England in 2004. He was playing league cricket in Lancashire, but was called up when Shane Bond went home with a back injury. Franklin was included for the third Test at Trent Bridge, and although New Zealand lost he did his cause no harm with six wickets, five of them Test century-makers.

Fielding position: Occasional wicketkeeper

A left-hand opening batsman, Imrul Kayes was the leading run-scorer for Khulna Division in the 2007-08 National Cricket League less than 12 months since making his first-class debut. Kayes soon made his way into Bangladesh's Academy team. With Bangladesh struggling to find a partner for Tamim Iqbal, Kayes staked his claim with impressive performances at the top of the order during the Academy's tour of Sri Lanka, and was rewarded with a place in Bangladesh's ODI squad to face New Zealand in October 2008. Kayes toured South Africa next month and despite a poor show in the ODIs, he earned a call-up to the squad for the Tests against the same opposition.

JP Duminy

Full name: Jean-Paul Duminy

Born: April 14, 1984, Strandfontein, Cape Town, Cape Province

Major teams: South Africa, Cape Cobras, Deccan Chargers, Devon, Mumbai Indians, South Africa Under-19s, Western Province, Western Province Boland

Playing role: Middle-order batsman

Batting style: Left-hand bat

Bowling style: Right-arm offbreak

Jean-Paul Duminy was identified very early on as a potential international player, but having made his ODI debut in 2004, it was another three years before he cemented a regular place in the team. Partly that was down to South Africa's strong battling line-up and partly down to his own inconsistency, failing to live up to high expectations. However, when his Test chance came, through an injury to Ashwell Prince, he launched his career in a manner bettered by few players. On debut he helped guide South Africa to a successful chase of 414 in Perth with an unbeaten 50, then he followed that with a serene 166 in Melbourne to rescue to his team from the prospect of a huge deficit.

Ravi Rampaul

Full name: Ravindranath Rampaul

Born: October 15, 1984, Preysal, Trinidad

Major teams: Ireland, West Indies, Trinidad & Tobago, University of West Indies Vice Chancellor's XI, West Indies A

Batting style: Left-hand bat

Bowling style: Right-arm fast-medium

Tall, strong and well-built, Ravi Rampaul is one among a bunch of West Indian fast bowlers who is trying to find a regular place in the Test and ODI sides. When in form, Rampaul moves the ball both ways at a brisk pace, and is capable of bowling long spells. For a long time, though, it seemed Rampaul might never fulfill his potential at international level, as he did little of note in his first six years in international cricket, partly due to injury: he was picked to tour southern Africa in 2003-04, and England later that year, but he broke down and returned home, shin splints sidelining him for more than a year.
