Watson's Test recall not guaranteed
Michael Clarke has warned his vice-captain Shane Watson that he faces much stiffer competition for a place in Australia's Test team by choosing to play as a batsman rather than an allrounder.
Watson will return to international cricket in Wednesday's ODI against West Indies in Canberra, ahead of the four-Test tour of India, having spent a month out of the game due to a calf injury that he aggravated during the Boxing Day Test.
For the time being Watson has decided not to bowl, as it has typically been bowling that has caused his many injury problems over the years. He is desperate to enjoy a sustained run in the national team instead of constantly battling niggles. Although he hopes to be in a position to start bowling again ahead of this year's Ashes tour, Watson will for the time being need to justify his place as a batsman only.
"I don't think anybody walks into the Australian cricket team. It's about performance, and the strength of Shane is that he's performed over a period of time, in all three forms of the game," Clarke said. "He's vice-captain of the team and it will be great to have Watto back.
"As I've said to Watto, while he's not bowling he goes into a much bigger pool of players ... the pool of batsmen is much bigger than the pool of allrounders in Australian cricket at the moment. But Shane knows if he's at his best, he's as good as any player in the world, let alone in the Australian team. Our goal as a team is to help Watto get back to his best."

Re: Thread for Australia Tour of India(1)
Nathan Lyon, the Australia offspinner, believes Australia should field two spinners in the Test series against India, which begins in two weeks' time. Lyon was one of eight members of the Australia Test squad who landed in Chennai on Thursday, to acclimatise ahead of the series.
"I personally think so [that two spinners should play]. It's going to be a big challenge for all of us in the different conditions over here," Lyon said. "Hopefully there'll be an opportunity where two spinners will be able to go out on the field together for Australia."
Lyon pointed to the success the English slow bowlers enjoyed in India last November-December as evidence that more spinners is a strategy that is likely to work. He took note of a few things that he would like to emulate, he said. "I certainly watched [Monty] Panesar and [Graeme] Swann. They bowled quite well. I did watch Swann very, very closely and I hope to take in a few things and put the same method into practice against India. And India, they even played four spinners in the last Test against England."
Lyon said. "It's going to be a good challenge for all of us, and it's going to be really good pushing each other along for spots in the first Test side."
Dennis Lillee, the former Australia fast bowler, is in Chennai too and will work with the Australian team, researching why several of their young fast bowlers seem to be breaking down. "I'll be consulting when there are technical issues or injuries, but I'm not going to be travelling with the team," Lillee told the Hindu. "I'm looking into a lot of things, certainly their training methods, but also technique. My focus is on fitness, strength, and flexibility. So there's a lot I'll be researching and thinking about."

Ishant heads for Melbourne to sort ankle problem
India fast bowler Ishant Sharma is set to consult a specialist in Melbourne as a "precautionary measure" after experiencing pain in his left ankle, on which he had surgery in early 2012. This could be a blow to India's bowling plans ahead of the home Test series against Australia, which begins in less than a fortnight.
Ishant had sustained a ligament injury to his left ankle during India's tour of England in August 2011, but underwent the required operation in March 2012, after returning from the tour of Australia. He was out of competitive cricket till August, when he was picked for the home Test series against New Zealand, but did not make the playing XI. He was finally back in action for India in the Tests against England in December, and played the limited-overs series that followed too, against Pakistan and then England. Following the England ODIs, Ishant once again felt discomfort in his ankle.
India's attack for the Australia series is already in some trouble. Zaheer Khan, their most experienced seamer, was dropped on form for the final Test against England and, more recently, missed the final few matches of the Ranji Trophy with a calf strain and is yet to begin bowling again. Their other preferred quick option of late, Umesh Yadav, played the first Test of the England series before sustaining with a serious back injury.
Varun Aaron, meanwhile, will travel to London to get advice on treatment of his back problem. "I will be going there next week, where I will be meeting a couple of doctors and seeking their advice. They will review the state of fitness of my back and based on that I will take a call on when I should begin bowling," Aaron told theIndian Express. "I have been bowling on and off but haven't bowled flat out. After this consultation I will get a clear picture of my body."
