South Africa's World Cup woes continued when they messed up the chance of pushing Australia out of the 1999 World Cup. The latter had prematurely celebrated catching Waugh at mid-wicket, a grave mistake as the Australian batsman had went on to make a stunning 120 not out. He had arrived at the crease when Australia were stuttering at 48 for 3. His innings not only kept them in the World Cup but also placed them above South Africa in the Super Six stage. Four days later when the two teams met again in the in famous tied semi-final, South Africa were forced to bow out because of that one minute detail.
