No world cricket tournament can be complete without Asian representation in the knockouts and by end of today, we shall know which of the four Asian teams is unlucky to miss out. It would have been Bangladesh had this been an ICC event of the 90s or 2000s, but in the new world order of cricket, Bangladesh got in first, and today Lanka are favourites to go through.

The short journey to this point for Pakistan has been expectedly volatile. Without any of their dependable stars from the 2015 World Cup, they lost poorly against India but came back strongly against South Africa in a match affected by rain. Sri Lanka were even lower on the expectation meter having lost a series 0-5 to South Africa and arrived in London as the rank 8 side with no more than three known faces. But along the way, just as a team as obscure as this one had shaken the world by landing a winning streak in 1996, these boys too have played inspiring cricket.

The momentum then, is with both sides but Lankans have something else - a sense of self-belief that they are not minnows but belong among the big boys, even with their best batsman of the decade sitting behind the commentary mike. The flambouyance of Kusal Mendis and Dickwella up the order was proven, but Asela Gunaratne took on the mighty Indian bowling attack to chase 320+ was an extraordinary feat. Angelo Mathews is a key character of this resurgent Lankan side and although him bowling is still unlikely due to injury, a fifty or 100 off his bat would certainly see the Lankans going closer to the semis spot.

Pakistanis have said all the right things at press conferences this tournament, but proceeded to mess things up. Their only victory was in a curtailed game and although deserved, they need a solid win up their kitty to believe they can be contenders too. Mohammad Amir and captain Sarfraz are the team's keys in bowling and batting

• Malinga last held an ICC trophy in 2014 but has lost much form after that. He'll go hard at this possibly last shot at getting one again

ICC Champions Trophy: I don't know why we call South Africans big players, questions Harbhajan Singh

South Africa once again when they lost to defending champions India in a must-win game at the Champions Trophy. Put into bat first, South Africa were bundled out for 191 thanks to some. In reply, India rode of twin fifties by Shikhar Dhawan (78) and captain Virat Kohli (76 not out) to confirm India's place in the semi-finals.
Spin ace Harbhajan Singh, who is one of the ICC brand ambassadors for the Champions Trophy added salt to their wounds questioning if some of their star players deserved to be called big players.
"I don't know how we can call them big players. You are not big players if you can't win big tournaments. I think we should all ask ourselves if we use the big players' tag very loosely," Harbhajan told India Today.
South Africa were off to a cautious but solid start before twin run outs of and Faf du Plessis turned the game on its head. India bowlers then kept the run-scoring under control. Their loss to India also had all the makings of a team .
"I don't feel like saying this being a cricketer myself. But after seeing their show I am convinced by what has been said in the media all this while that they choke in big games. India have handed over the chokers medal to South Africa which they can take back home," he quipped.
