Cook 'as good as anyone, barring Bradman' - McCullum

Brendon McCullum, the New Zealand captain, has heaped the ultimate praise on his opposite number Alastair Cook saying, on current form, he is as good as anyone who has played after Donald Bradman. Cook, who scored his 24th Test hundred in Dunedin, laughed off the shock comparison.



McCullum, though, did not hold back his praise after being asked a question about how New Zealand planned to quell Cook's run-scoring feats. "He's obviously a genius batsman, his record is testament to that," McCullum said. "Where he is at in his career at the moment, he's as good as anyone who has played the game, probably barring Bradman."

New Zealand and England have played each other in 10 Tests at the Basin Reserve in Wellington. England have won four times and New Zealand only once, in 1978, when an England side captained by Geoff Boycott were bowled out for a paltry 64 chasing 137 for victory.


Nick Compton and Alastair Cook are currently averaging 81 per opening partnership. The sample size is small - they have now played five Tests together - but only Jack Hobbs and Herbert Sutcliffe - who averaged 87.81 in 38 innings - of regular England openers have a better record.


New Zealand have won four of their last 33 Tests against England dating back to 1986. The last one of those game seven Test ago, at Hamilton in 2008,


James Anderson needs eight wickets to become the fourth England bowler after Fred Trueman, Bob Willis and Ian Botham to take 300 in Tests. He needs five to draw level with Derek Underwood, currently the fourth highest wicket-taker in Tests for England.

New Zealand have not won any of the last six Tests on the ground. The last two - against South Africa in 2012 and Pakistan in 2011 - have been drawn, though the weather played a role on both occasions.

he 210-run partnership between Nick Compton and Jonathan Trott is the seventh double-century stand for England in Tests in New Zealand. Three of them have come since 2000.


For the first time ever against New Zealand, and the 16th time overall, England have had two double-century stands in a single series. The previous time they achieved it was in the series in India in 2012-13.


Since the beginning of 2009, England have the highest (with Australia) number of double-century stands (13). India are next (12) followed by South Africa (11).

Compton followed his century in the first Test with another in Wellington. He has now scored two centuries and a fifty at an average of 47.22.

Trott's century is his ninth overall and first against New Zealand. Five of his hundreds have come in away Tests.

Compton is the 21st England batsman to be dismissed for exactly 100. Len Hutton has been dismissed on 100 four times and Kevin Pietersen twice.
