Lendl Simmons
Lendl Simmons
Full name Lendl Mark Platter Simmons
Born January 25, 1985, Port of Spain, Trinidad
Major teams West Indies, Trinidad & Tobago
Batting style Right-hand bat
Bowling style Right-arm medium-fast
Fielding position Occasional wicketkeeper
Relation Uncle - PV Simmons
A right-hand opening batsman, Lendl Simmons represented West Indies in the 2002 and 2004 Under-19 World Cups and made his first-class debut six weeks after his 17th birthday. He won his first full cap in December 2006 - making a second-ball duck - after a productive domestic season in 2005-06 and a successful A-team tour of England later in the year. On that trip he thumped an unbeaten 108 off 122 balls in a one-dayer against the touring Pakistan side. When England toured the Caribbean in 2008-09, he demonstrated his credentials in the longer version of the game, with a career-best 282 against England A at St Kitts. He recieved his Test cap against England at Port-of-Spain in March 2009 and made 24 and 8. An excellent fielder and an occasional wicketkeeper, he is a nephew of former Test cricketer Phil Simmons.

Ajantha Mendis
Full name Balapuwaduge Ajantha Winslo MendisAjantha Mendis
Born March 11, 1985, Moratuwa
Major teams Sri Lanka, Combined Provinces, Hampshire, Kolkata Knight Riders, Sri Lanka Army, Sri Lanka Board President's XI, Wayamba
Playing role Bowler
Batting style Right-hand bat
Bowling style Right-arm offbreak, Legbreak
Although classified as a right-arm, slow-medium bowler, Ajantha Mendis is a spinner who bowls a mixture of googlies, offbreaks, top-spinners, flippers and legbreaks. Batsmen have been confounded by the variety of deliveries he has up his sleeve and are at a loss to figure out what his stock delivery is. Mendis was a prolific wicket-taker for Sri Lanka Army in the 2007-08 season and had taken 46 wickets at an average of 10.56 and strike-rate of 31 from six matches. His performances did not go unnoticed for Mendis was called up to the Sri Lanka squad for the tour of West Indies in April 2008. After impressing on debut in the Caribbean, Mendis only grew in stature - in particular, because of his 'carrom ball', which he releases with an unusual snap of his fingers. In a short span Mendis has flummoxed some international batsmen who've played spin pretty well in their careers

Dale Steyn
Full name Dale Willem SteynDale Steyn
Born June 27, 1983, Phalaborwa
Major teams South Africa, Africa XI, Deccan Chargers, Essex, Northerns, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Titans, Warwickshire
Playing role Bowler
Batting style Right-hand bat
Bowling style Right-arm fast
Dale Steyn could be just the latest nuclear-tipped arrow that South Africa have drawn from their seemingly bottomless quiver of classy fast bowlers. The trouble, for opposing batsmen, is that he is rather more than that. Pure pace is one thing, pinpoint pure pace distinctly another. Pinpoint pure pace poison-tipped with aggression still another. Add the regularity with which Steyn moves the ball away from right-handers, and the way his deliveries skid at batsmen - a lack of height isn't all bad - and the danger he poses is obvious.

Shane Watson
Full name: Shane Robert WatsonShane Watson
Born: June 17, 1981, Ipswich, Queensland
Major teams: Australia, Hampshire, New South Wales, Queensland, Rajasthan Royals, Tasmania
Nickname Watto
Playing role Allrounder
Batting style Right-hand bat
Bowling style Right-arm fast-medium
Height 1.83 m
To conquer international cricket, Shane Watson first had to beat his fragile body. Despite boasting an athletic figure made for photo shoots, Watson's frame was so brittle it threatened to break him. He refused to give up. Not through recurrences of back stress fractures, hamstring strains, calf problems, hip complaints, a dislocated shoulder or a suspected heart attack that turned out to be food poisoning. He changed his training, preferring pilates to weights, gave up alcohol, but not his dream. It finally paid off in 2009, when he was chosen as a Test opener in the middle of the Ashes series. Many batsmen would have been uncomfortable with the promotion from the middle order, especially after failing when given the job with Queensland, but Watson has been used to re-inventing himself. In his first eight Tests in the new role he scored seven fifties and a 120. With a history of setbacks, it was not a surprise that his first Test century became such a drama, but after two scores in the 90s and an 89, he finally brought it up at the MCG - thanks to a single from a dropped catch. He has earned some luck.

Shahadat Hossain
Full name Kazi Shahadat HossainShahadat Hossain
Born August 7, 1986, Dhaka
Major teams Bangladesh, Bangladesh A, Bangladesh Under-19s, Dhaka Division
Also known as Rajib
Batting style Right-hand bat
Bowling style Right-arm medium-fast
When Shahadat Hossain was discovered during a talent-spotting camp in Narayanganj, and whisked away to the Bangladesh Institute of Sports (BKSP) for refinement, few would have predicted that he would become the first Bangladeshi cricketer to have his name etched on the honours board at Lord's. Yet that was exactly what transpired when, in Bangladesh's second Test tour of England in 2010, he picked up 5 for 98 in England's first innings of the first Test at Lord's.Shahadat first represented Bangladesh at the 2004 Under-19 World Cup, where he stood out as a promising fast bowler, and was rapidly called up for Bangladesh A. Shahadat - who's also known as "Rajib" - has all the necessary attributes for a successful seam bowler, bar outright pace. He is tall, comes in off a smooth run-up, and doesn't put unnecessary pressure on his body with a slightly open-chested delivery position.

Rizwan Cheema
Full name: Rizwan Ahmed CheemaRizwan Cheema
Born August 15, 1978, Pakistan
Major teams Canada, Canada A, Ontario
Also known as Cheema
Playing role Top-order batsman
Batting style Right-hand bat
Bowling style Right-arm medium
A big-hitting batsman who also bowls some handy medium pace, Rizwan Cheema came to notice with a 61-ball 89 against West Indies in his second ODI. In the Canada T20 tournament, in October 2008, he hit ten sixes, more than either Sanath Jayasuriya or Shahid Afridi, and was his team's top run-getter, averaging over 60 in the series. Born and raised in Pakistan, Cheema, who moved to Canada in the early 2000s, had only ever played cricket at club level, but his tendency to belt the ball into orbit caught attention in the Toronto and District Cricket Association league. He turned in a noteworthy season in 2005, scoring 627 runs in 14 matches at just under 50, and taking 24 wickets at 13.12. After a disappointing 2006, Cheema established himself as the league's most dangerous batsman the following year with two big hundreds. He went on to make his international debut in the summer of 2008 with impressive results, narrowly missing out in a maiden ODI hundred against Netherlands in July 2009.
