Re: KFC Big Bash 2013-14
The KFC T20 Big Bash League returns to Sydney, with the Sydney Thunder hosting their first home game for BBL|03. The Thunder didn’t take the points last week in Sydney Smash 4, but their improvements across the board was there for all to see. The likes ofMike Hussey, Eoin Morgan, and Dirk Nannes bring so much crucial experience to an otherwise young side brimming with talent.
Their opponents, the Adelaide Strikers, took a point away from their opening match in Hobart against the Hurricanes last Sunday, with the match abandoned after just six overs of play. As a result, both teams are super keen to take advantage of the short straight boundaries of Stadium Australia, and to record their first entry in the ‘win’ column for 2013-2014.
This match takes on extra significance in Canberra, too, with anywhere up to four recent and current ACT Comets players lining up for both sides: Ryan Carters and Jason Florosfor the Thunder, and Ben Oakley and Jono Dean in line for a debut with the Strikers. Dean’s brother Blake, who played for the Thunder at the SCG last Saturday, would’ve been another had he held his spot in the side.
Key Battle: Thunder bowlers v Alex Hales
If the Thunder quicks learned anything from Alex Hales’ whirlwind innings in Hobart last weekend, it’s that he can find the boundary just as comfortably all around the ground. Point, cover, long off, mid-wicket, even twice over the top of the ‘keeper’s head! “He’s got a good piece of that” was the common description from Channel Ten’s Mark Howard, as Hales found the boundary ten times in just 19 balls, making 49 before running himself out.
Therefore, the lesson for the Thunder bowlers should be to just give him nothing. Don’t give him any width he can free the arms at, and don’t give any anything too full that he can just swing through the line at. It might be easier said than done, the way Hales took down the Hobart bowlers, but if the Thunder have any designs on winning their first game in more than two year, it simply has to happen.
Dark Horse: Michael Klinger
He very rarely gets the press of his more-fancied batting counterparts, but Strikers opener Michael Klinger just keeps delivering week in, week out. One of BBL|02’s leading run-scorers, and with three fifties to boot, Klinger is so often the rock at the other end while the Strikers’ big hitters go nuts. It was the same last week in Hobart, too, with Klinger’s 17-ball unbeaten 32 no less important than the fireworks of Alex Hales.

So close. Thunder go down by 6 runs despite a brilliant 85 off 56 from Mike Hussey.
